Polaroid 600 at an abandoned farm
This video i take polaroids again! after a few months since my last polaroid 600 shoot, where i took some black and white portraits, this time i'd be focusing on some landscapes while back home in the east midlands. I love shooting instant film, and these videos are fun to make so definitely show some support!

Why the square format is the best format.
Переглядів 2,3 тис.День тому
The square format in undoubtably one of my favourite film formats, being so uniform but also subverting so many expected rules of photography. Companies like rolliflex and hasselblad have defined an era of film photography, so i wanted to attempt to discuss why i love the square format so much in my first ever video essay. Sorry if this video is ramberly! its my first attempt of this style of v...

the best way to recreate the film look in photos? (Dehancer Film)
i got a polaroid autofocus 660 back in november (for $50 no less) and i've been rather obsessed with taking candid portraits of friends with it (and yeah the prices for a single pack being like $40 AUD is ridiculous), its a lot of fun
price is crazy but the vibes are worth it 🙇♀️
I love polaroids so much! My partner and I found a regular One Step at a thrift store for 20 and we had so much fun trying it out. It's our first time with it so it so we had a ton of bad shots and even accidentally firing one. But it will be the main road trip camera bc there is a timeless feel to it. The shots you got are really awesome, much better focus and lighting that what I was able to do. I actually really like the shot of the really over-grown truck, it shows a lot of the growth but also the age of the truck and how much of it has been returned to nature!
polaroid one steps are beautiful 🙏 but yes the timeless feel to the polaroids are so great! glad you liked my photos :p
Really enjoyed your work here. Thanks for sharing your passion for it all. Really enjoyed it.
There is no such thing as a “best format”.
A really interesting perspective, thank you! I can't quite tell if I agree with you yet but I want to know. Cropping after for instagram I always seem to end up losing something important, I think I might set my aspect ratio in (digital) camera to 1:1 for a bit and see how it feels.
Just a minor thing, on 2:57, found typo of Vivian Maier, misspelled as 'Miaer'. Anyway, shame on major digital camera manufacturing companies not making square format sensors.. Square's fun, and also maxxing out lens' image-circle coverage. Maybe they're not quite profittable, being kinda niche market...
yeahh i noticed my misspell way too late in production, but yeah it’s a shame there isn’t much of a market for square format cameras anymore, would love to see new ones!
I’m an old guy who’s been taking photos since the mid-90s when I was already in my 20s. I’m also a big music fan. It took a while to dawn on me that square format seemed like such a natural choice because of years interacting with album art.
My Young Friend :) Nice beginner collection !!!!!! The thing about collections is You DO NOT let go of any of them !@!!!!! You may never find them again !!!!!!!! They will not bring much money,,,, and they will all fit in a small box for storage :) :) :)
Nice presentation, Matt. Thank you.
Where can i buy a nikom?😂
So for M42 screw mount I can recommend two cameras, of which there are a total of 26 relatively identical or similar models from three manufacturers and, under license, the export models from five or six photo retailers such as Foto Quelle, Photo Porst or Sears. Of these 26 models, however, only two have a hotshoe and these are the Sigma Mark 1 and the Universa Interflex TL. The special feature of these models is that the dial for shutter speed and ASA/ISO is not located on the top of the camera, as is the case with most SLR cameras, but on the front, next to the lens mount. You have a metal leaf shutter, you have TTL exposure metering and with both versions you have a solid and quite heavy camera with which you could also hammer a nail into the wall if necessary. For the Universa Interflex TL there is a very good video from Analogue Insights here on UA-cam and at arhphotographic, which has now presented over 380 cameras numbered consecutively, camera number 61 is the Sigma Mark 1. Both cameras, even if very similar, are great and both with M42 screw thread and not so expensive to get if you have a little patience. As far as your Agfa Isolette 2 is concerned, perhaps the Agfa Isolette 3 is more for you, as it has a rangefinder. You will need an external light meter, but that shouldn't be a problem. Incidentally, the main manufacturers were Ricoh with the Ricoh Singlex TLS, Cosina with the Cosina Hi-Lite and Chinon with the Chinonflex TTL. Sigma is a special case, as they bought the original blueprints for the Ricoh Singlex TLS from Ricoh nine years after its market launch and built their first own camera, the Sigma Mark 1, according to their blueprints. And the Universa Interflex TL is basically a modified Cosina Hi-Lite. Greetings from Germany Lutz
Vivian is one of my favorite artists of all time. I take try to learn as much as I can from her, and I just looove her sense of style! Also your eyeshadow looks great!
His eyeshadow doesn’t look great from an aesthetic point of view it’s the wrong colour and his unkempt look doesn’t do justice to what should be make up to acompany a more glamorous outfit.
@@I-SelfLordAndMaster No it looks great. You gotta let people exist, try out styles and different combinations of things. Life is too boring and short to let other people dictate how someone should dress
@@averytheamazingone I knew someone would start did I say anything about express or freedom that’s your fascist mind working. Aesthetically it doesn’t look good and the whole idea of make up is just that to be aesthetically pleasing nothing to do with freedom.
In 1969 I entered the World of Photojournalism at 17yrs.... I walked into a room full of Speed Graphics n Rolleiflex !!! I had My Nikon F... wow! i’m sure you have so many amazing stories from your time working! thank you for the kind comment :)
Naw, a vertical or horizontal "choice" gives more options when creating art. Square can work, so its not that it can't, but it can limit as well.
Yes, but limitations foster creativity. I understand why you're saying that a vertical or horizontal "choice" gives more options. It is beacause it is much easier to see a photo, you can capture a larger variety of scenes (maybe we find it easier because we are used to see "horizontally"). But more photos does not necessary mean better photos.
@@dogarucos ANYTHING can foster creativity, limitations shouldn't be needed, restrictions can only limit. You can limit yourself too two colors of paint, and still create a painting, but those restrictions still limit and pigeon hole how far you "may" go. Doesn't mean you can't create art with a limited approach, hell some many prefer it, or need it. Not me, I want it wide open, nothing preventing nothing.
Your videos heal my brainrot
I love the square format! Amazing video!
square format aka non binary icon
The square 1:1 aspect ratio was my favorite when I was shooting weddings with my Yashica Mat and Mamiya TLR medium format cameras. When I replaced my worn-out wedding cameras for Mamiya RB67 medium format SLR cameras, the rectangular 7:6 aspect ratio became my favorite.
One of the photography channels I enjoy watching the most. Great work!
thank you so much! its very appreciated!!
Watch out for the green monster, the sticky grease within the focus ring.. maybe put in the oven at 70°C for 20min ...
matt i want your gender
I usually take square photos with my phone
Y love the rolleiflex is amazing
I am not supposed to comment this, but, nice nails! And great photos, and I've got a question is it worth it buying one of those cameras having a digital camera, for example me, that has a Canon M50, that can not fully but kind of copy those results, is it worth it? Thanks, from Portugal
camera choice is up to you! your canon M50 will be able to take great images, is up to you if you want to experiment with analogue photography, especially medium format film, i would definitely recommend it though!
definitely one of my favorite videos - partly because it feels meaningful and honest, and partly because I just agree. 1:1 has to be my favorite aspect ratio for photography because... thats what my phone takes. Since its also what I watched this video on, I got to enjoy this video in 1:1, with no black bars! The focus motor on my phone broke a few months ago and now you have to hit it until it happens to focus where you want but thats okay by me - I'm saving up for a 6x6 film camera at the moment so my squares will live on
6x6 camera is definitely worth saving up for! you can get some pretty good cheap folding ones too, but a TLR definitely makes the experience more worth it :p glad you liked the video!!
I love the square format too, shooting with my Rolleiflexes is my favourite thing photography wise and I just find that I compose things much more naturally this way. Not everyone likes this format, I think sometimes it's a difficult adjustment to make when you're not used to seeing something in a 1x1 ratio, but I think it's a format that rewards you if you stick with it. I got my first Rollei in 2014 after shooting 35mm pretty much my whole life, the jump to medium format was very striking in terms of the image quality, but it took me quite a while before I became comfortable with placing my subject/scene within in a square. Now it's pretty much the default for me, and I've added an extra two Rolleis to my arsenal over the years.
That rollei collection sounds great! but yeah i know a lot of people don’t like the square format which is a shame, as you said, it just feels so natural to compose with it
It’s not often I comment on UA-cam videos, but this was absolutely phenomenal- I’ve been a subscriber for a little while, but this is by far my favourite video of yours. Keep up the amazing work! 🎉
thank you so much! was definitely anxious with this one being a different kind of video format, but the support is appreciated :)
Do not downgrade, you have a very similar collection to mine, mostly affordable stuff. I havent got a foldable camera yet though. My Praktica MTL3 doesnt work but i so love the way it looks, yes you mentioned it, boxy! Ive got like 10 holgas and dianas, they are really awesome. Im a sucker for russian cameras too, got my zenits, feds and some former soviet kievs. Love your collection. If you fancy toy cameras, give some of the DIY kits a go, the lomo konstructor and the recesky tlr, lots of fun, not the best images. My go to cameras are still the pentax spotmatics, reliable cameras, and the minolta srts.
Yes! love my boxy Prakitca cameras and Zenits too ahah, and i've been eyeing up some kievs. I've been tempted to try out the DIY cameras too, thanks for the recommendations!
@@matt_tube I would recommend a zorki 4a, a Fed 4 or 5 and a Kiev 2(contax actually). And try the lomo Konstructor it's pretty fun. I recently got a Lubitel 2, these are exceptionally good cameras, u can get a second hand one online.
Incredible collection, you have G.A.S. worse than me!😊 No half frame?😮 I have the Olympus Pen EE half frame currently loaded with kodak gold 200... I've added your channel, it's always good to connect with other analogue photographers 📸
The G.A.S is awful ahah, but no half frame yet! have been meaning to look for some good affordable ones to try them out!
Very nostalgic for Olympus point and shoot cameras. My mum used the AF 1 as our holiday camera. I inherited it years later and I still own it.
The issue with the AE1 is potentially an easy fix. Big emphasis on the potentially. If you don't get it sent away for repair or sell it as is then you can try repairing it yourself. All you really need is a set of JIS precision screwdrivers that can be had from amazon for about 14 quid or so. The black plastic cover piece that sits under/around the shutter speed dial is held in place by little grommets that are prone to breaking off and falling down into the advance mechanism below. It might of course be a different issue, so it's always good to do your diagnostics and double check everything. If you do decide to try it then I recommend the youtuber Romping Bronco. He's got loads of videos showing AE1 repairs. I don't remember which one has the advance column jam but you'd be as well watching all the videos about the AE1 just to familiarise yourself with all the tripwires hiding under the top plate 🤣 So long as you do your research well and take your time it's a skill anyone with a steady hand can learn. I bought an absolute writeoff of an AE1 off ebay and managed to get it back in working order (minus the light meter) in less than a week with no prior experience. It's the most joy I've ever felt in accomplishment.
ah thank you! i did do a bit of research, i started to take it apart but got stuck at removing the shutter speed dial, i'll definitely try giving it another try with some different tools, thanks for the comment!
Why the F2 over the F3?
i prefer the more mechanical vibe of the F2 but the F3 was also very tempting! also got a pretty good deal on it so can’t complain :p
LOVE the long form content :))) keep going bro!!! also love seeing the camera collection
bro editing a 17 minute video was so demotivating, never again

The second half of episode 7 of Hakumei and Mikochi revolves around a traveling photographer with a plate camera and her process of taking natural photos of her subjects. There's also a series called FLAG which might be of interest to you: It revolves around digital cameras rather than film, but almost the entire thing is shown to the viewer through the lens of a war journalist's camera which makes for an interesting experience.
they sound really cool! thanks for the recommendations
How could I forget Tamayura? Ah, yes, it's because it's forgettable.
You should definitely watch the Area 88 episode (I won't write what it is) because Makoto plays a big role in it! From a Japanese anime fan.
It's crazy how animators spent hours adding accurate details to the cameras even though they'd only be recognized by a very small audience. I'm glad that you took the time to cover this niche within a niche that almost no one has thought about before!
thank you! glad you also enjoy the crazy attention to details!!

do you think theres a difference between the super and the quartz date? i just bought the regular but i hope i didn't make the wrong choice
i’m pretty sure they are very similar, i think the AF-1 super has small upgrades like a faster flash recharge and macro mode that the quartzdate doesn’t have, but the quartzdate looks superb anyway! same great lens and nice design so i’m sure you’ll be fine!!
